why?
Wood is cellulose sheathed in lignin, and almost nothing except white-rot fungi dismantles lignin efficiently, so decay creeps inward from exposed surfaces. That's why chipping transforms the math: the same board as chips offers hundreds of times the surface area. At roughly 400–600:1 carbon to nitrogen, wood also stalls a pile unless you feed it extra greens.

- Plywood, MDF, and particle board are wood plus adhesive resins; they belong with treated wood, not here.
