why?
A pencil barrel is incense-cedar, an untreated softwood — compostable in principle, but wood decay runs on fungal time, because fungi must dismantle lignin before bacteria can reach the cellulose inside. A standard hexagonal barrel runs about 7 mm across, thick enough to ride through several turnings looking untouched. The lacquer coat is the most stubborn part, surviving as paint flecks long after the wood softens.

- Pull the metal ferrule and eraser off with pliers
- Run the stub through a sharpener — shavings compost far faster than sticks
- Snap whatever remains into short lengths
watch out for
- Ferrules and erasers never rot: the band is aluminum and the eraser is synthetic rubber or vinyl — both are trash.
- Glossy novelty pencils carry more coating than exposed wood — those are better off in the trash.
- Mechanical pencils are plastic and metal throughout; nothing on them composts.

Is graphite pencil lead safe in garden soil?
Yes — graphite is elemental carbon: insoluble, unreactive, and not taken up by plant roots, so a core left behind in the pile becomes one more speck of soil carbon. The pencil worth trashing instead is an antique, whose painted finish could predate the 1978 US ban on lead in consumer paint.
