Bagged potting mix is not soil at all: it's ground bark, peat or coir, and perlite, so the organic fraction keeps breaking down once you dump it in. That fraction is carbon-heavy and low in nitrogen, which makes spent mix a mild brown rather than an inert filler, and the old root threads carry live bacteria and fungi that colonize fresh material faster than bare scraps would. Perlite is expanded volcanic glass and vermiculite is a heat-puffed mica mineral; neither one ever decomposes, and both ride along as harmless pale specks in the finished compost.
