why?
Oak litter is loaded with tannins and lignin, which is why it is still recognizable a year after maple leaves have vanished. Fresh oak leaves do test acidic, around pH 4.5 to 5.5, but those acids are consumed during decomposition and finished oak leaf mold comes out close to neutral. Shredding changes the timeline more than anything else: one mower pass multiplies the cut edges fungi can attack and roughly halves the wait.
