Molded fiber is vacuum-formed from waste-paper slurry with no glue at all — hydrogen bonds between wet fibers hold the shape, the same physics as papier-mâché. Because nothing binds it but those bonds, a soak in water undoes the whole structure, handing microbes shredded paper with enormous surface area. It sits around 200:1 carbon to nitrogen, so it doubles as a fine counterweight to wet kitchen scraps.
