- bokashi: A pet-waste-only bokashi bucket works, but bury the ferment deep under shrubs or lawn, never in a vegetable bed.
- tumbler: Dedicate the drum to pet waste alone; a tumbler you also use for kitchen scraps cross-contaminates food compost.

Dog stool routinely carries Toxocara canis eggs along with Giardia cysts and Salmonella, and those roundworm eggs stay infective in soil for years once they toughen up. The one recipe extension services publish — two parts waste to one part sawdust, held above 140°F and turned weekly for four to eight weeks — came out of a study with Alaskan mushers, and even its authors stop short of saying it kills roundworm eggs, the most heat-resistant thing in dog manure. A mixed household pile never gets near that heat, so it leaves live eggs in finished compost.
how to prep it
- Scoop daily while it's fresh rather than letting it weather in the yard
- Mix one part waste with two parts sawdust or shredded dry leaves
- Bury each addition in the pile core and cap it with browns
watch out for
- Finished pet-waste compost goes on lawns, trees, and ornamental beds only — never on vegetables, herbs, or strawberries, no matter how long it cured.
- Site the pile at least 100 feet downhill from wells, streams, and vegetable beds so runoff can't carry pathogens where you eat.
- Pregnant people and anyone immunocompromised should skip handling it and let someone else turn the pile.
